Namaskaram Everyone,

Our February monthly CCC event was this past Sunday, just a few weeks after celebrating Bhogi and Pongal. We had the pleasure of hosting two new vocalists (Laya and Anagha) and two new violinists (Advika and Anirrudha), as well as several seniors who are continuing to participate in CCC despite their busy schedules in this college app season.

The event started with a cornerstone Papanasam Sivan kriti ‘Mahalakshmi Jaganmatha’ in Shankarabharanam, and we ended with a melodious and familiar Behag RTP ‘Muruganin Marupeyar’ composed as a dhwi-nadai (2 kalai adhi talam, first half in chatusram and second half in kandam) pallavi. We had a variety of brisk kritis presented throughout the event, from ‘Emani Pogadudura’, ‘Atukaradani’, ‘TelisiRama’, and ‘Sitamma Mayamma’, to slower and intricate kritis like ‘Kaddanuvariki’ to fully encapsulate the ragam Thodi. We even had the pleasure of hearing an uncommon Varnam ‘Parama Nyanam’ in the ragam Janaranjani presented by Shruti, which was a composition of her Paramaguru Sri. Neyveli Santhanagopalan. Melodious Chandrajyothi by Nathan, mesmerizing Varali by Manasa, every performance left us feeling stunned at the work that each CCC student puts in for their presentations to be of the highest standard.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all the gurus who put in so much effort day in and day out to train their students. We appreciate their continued support of CCC, as they show up for not only their own students but any student of music. Thank you, Sri. Srinath, Smt Sandhya, Sri Hari, Smt Kashturi, Sri Shivkumar, Sri Gopi, Smt Akila, Sri Ravindrabharathy, Sri Susheel Narasimhan and Sri Saravanapriyan for making time to be at the event to encourage/bless our performers.

We had a special segment hosted by Padma Aunty in the middle of our CCC event to honor 3 of our esteemed Bay Area Gurus receiving awards at this year’s Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival. Sri. Hari Devanath, Smt. Kasthuri Shivakumar, and Sri. Shivakumar Bhat are being honored with the “Prof. T.R. Subrahmanyam Award” to commemorate their tireless promotion of Carnatic Music in the North American continent by teaching in the community and providing opportunities for aspiring Carnatic musicians to showcase their talents. It is a proud moment for us at CCC to see our own Resident Gurus receive this award, congratulations!!

Additionally, a huge thanks to all the CCC volunteers who make each event possible. The audio sounded amazing thanks to Nami uncle and his team, and the video, powerpoint, photography, social media, attendance and magazine teams are all instrumental in making the events run smoothly as well as bringing together the CCC community. We also have had an influx of youth volunteers, including this month’s performers Kedar, Anirudh and Manasa, who are essential in continuing the legacy of this platform, and we thank them all for taking the initiative to contribute to promoting this art form.

While Akshay and I (Shreya) have taken on the roles of performing in CCC events, this was our first venture into Emceeing… and it was a wonderful experience getting to participate in a CCC event with a different role! We had fun cracking jokes, performing skits, educating the students in various layam segments, and asking various trivia questions throughout the event. We thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity and hope to be back at a future CCC event as Emcees again!

As we’ve kicked off the new year and begun planning for the summer holidays, make sure to block off both June 8th and June 22nd, as we’ll be having an extra event to host our graduating seniors before they head off to college.

Our next event will be held at Shirdi Sai Parivar on March 9th, 2025 from 2pm-5pm. Please join us in supporting the performers next month, and looking forward to seeing you all there!

Thanks,

Shreya Venkatesan & Akshay Venkatesan (February CCC emcees)
